In February of 1893, Captain Baxter, his wife Helen and 2 daughters went on a trip to China. They arrived safely in Shanghai on June 25th, after several adventures visiting exotic islands. However, Captain Baxter became ill and needed to be treated at the American Hospital. Mrs. Baxter and the girls went ashore, staying in an American Hotel and sightseeing around the city. All three had their photograph taken during this interval, and those pictures are still treasured by a family member.
Intime, Captain Baxter had improved enough to make plans to return home. They set sail in confidence , but before many days, the captain's condition worsened, and in a few days he died.
The officers and crew planned to bury the Captain at sea, but Mrs. Baxter would have none of it. Determined to have him interred with his family at home, she has her husband's body placed in a large barrel and covered with salt brine. Then she proceeded to assist the first mate in navigating the vessel home. The superstitious crew members were alarmed, not only to have the captains body stowed aboard, but also to have a woman assisting to direct the course for their voyage.
Captain Baxter's remains were interred with a Christian Burial in the Baxter Family lot behind the South Dennis Congregational Church near his home.
Helen and he daughters continued to line in "The Pillars", and Mrs. Baxter conducted a small store at the front room, a custom followed by many widows on the Cape in the days before life insurance and social security. She remained in the home until her death in 1916 and is buried beside her husband in South Dennis.
